The design of the virtual universe will in many respects reflect the design of the real universe. But why? If the virtual world was not very much like the real world, what would we do, how would we interact, and for that matter, how would we function?

In fact, the virtual world already looks very much like the real. People build houses in virtual space. People drive cars in virtual space. And people wear designer clothes in virtual space. (Although, it may be noted that people build houses because they are used to having them, not because they really need them. People drive cars, not because they are useful, but because it is entertaining. And people wear clothes, not for warmth, but to fit in and to look cool.) No one wants to live in a cave and people are going to want to have things for the same basic reasons they want things here – entertainment, status, and utility.
